From the beginning, Chateau Souverain has had a presence in the finest appellations of Northern California’s wine country. All four wines are from some of the world’s best growing regions and are a testament to the careful execution of their winemaking process. Located at the historic Asti Winery, they work with vineyards that have farmed for over 20 years throughout Sonoma County, including Alexander Valley, Lake County, Mendocino and Russian River.
The story of Chateau Souverain begins in 1944 when J. Leland ‘Lee’ Stewart harvested his first crop of grapes in Napa Valley. In the years that followed, Stewart used innovation, meticulous standards and his natural gift for winemaking to establish Souverain as one of the great California wineries. Lee Stewart used innovation, a commitment to precision, and his natural gift for winemaking to establish Chateau Souverain as one of the great California wineries. In 1992 Ed Killian joined the winemaking team, and is currently still a valuable member.
Souverain is most proud of its Cabernet Sauvignon, and I have to agree! Simple and straight forward, this wine is rich with dark fruit flavors of blackberry and ripe cherry. Soft tannins and balanced acidity lead to a juicy finish. The Chardonnay is equally impressive, with its creamy texture and elegant layers. This wine is full-bodied, with a perfect combination of oak and fruit. Roasted pear, vanilla, and apple followed by a plush, buttery finish. Yum! Polished and smooth, the Merlot is an important part of the Souverain collection. Plum, black cherry, and blueberry are complimented by hints of oak and spice. Soft acid and mild tannins make for a medium bodied wine true to its origin.
Last, but definitely not least is the ever-refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. With mouthwatering acidity, this wine is crisp and refreshing. It is just what I was looking for: bone-dry, with notes of citrus and minerality. Right on time for Summer!
